How to Protect Our Wildlife

By: Stephanie Jelenic-Deb

Are you concerned about our wildlife? You definitely should be. Thanks
to Defenders of Wildlife, a website dedicated to protecting our wildlife,
you can stay informed and help make a difference and become involved
via the Internet. You can also look for upcoming events and volunteer
opportunities in your state. The
Defenders of Wildlife's mission is
“to protect species and the habitats
upon which they depend. In doing
so, we focus on preserving the
health of our nation's rich biological
heritage (biodiversity)”.

You might wonder why protecting
our wildlife is so important. “All of
us are connected to the natural
world in every way.  What happens
to nature will eventually impact all
of us.

A perfect example of this is global warming. While most of us are aware of
the impacts of global warming on polar bears, there are also many
impacts we are seeing on other species as well, including coral reefs,
which are dying due to warming waters and the changes in migration
routes with birds due to changing climate and habitats.  Soon, global
warming will impact us as well, affecting our food supply, our water, our
homes and even where we vacation”, said Cindy Hoffman, Vice President
of Communications (Defenders of Wildlife) As you can tell, protecting our
wildlife is extremely important, not only for the wildlife itself, but for all
of us as well.

Defenders of wildlife provide many fun and important information,
actions and activities on their website. You can become a member by a
simple donation as low as $25, along with your membership you will
receive a free Defenders of Wildlife windbreaker, their award winning
Defenders of Wildlife Magazine, an annual calendar with wildlife photos,
personalized address labels, and most importantly – knowing you made a
difference.

You can also adopt an animal for as
low as $20. There are many animals
to choose from such as, sea otters,
panda bears, wolves, polar bears,
penguins, sea turtles and many
more. With most adoptions you
will receive Plush of the animal
you adopted, a Personalized
Certificate of Adoption, a 5x7 Photo
of your animal, a Fact Sheet about
your animal, and free first class
shipping.

Another great thing about Defenders of wildlife website is that you can
take action right there online. You can sign petitions and write letters to
your senator to help protect our wildlife, join online discussion groups, or
start your own blog. You can also take action through the website by
searching for community activism and events in your area.

Cindy Hoffman has a very important message for Athena readers, “Your
generation will be impacted even more as the years go by.  But there is
something you do.  By changing the way you live, you can help protect
our wildlife and the planet we all call home.  You can ride your bike to
school instead of driving, you can change your light bulbs to fluorescents,
you can use cloth instead of plastic bags, turn the lights out when you
leave the room and so much more.  You have the power and the ability to
tackle this issue.  It's time for all of us to take a stand and make a
difference”.
