Ten Things to Do for Under Ten Dollars
by: Caitlin Emmons

So it's Thursday evening and you start making your weekend plans and it
is not long before you realize, you are broke. But this does not have to be
the end of a good weekend, in fact if you put just a little effort in, it can
become one of your best. So what can you do? Welcome to the ten for
under ten.

Movie night at home- Rent the movies you never saw in theaters or go
back for the classics. If we are sticking with the 10 theme, 10 Things I Hate
About You  and How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days are good starting points. In
order to cover everyone's interests, have all of your friends bring a movie
from home or go out and rent two of your personal favorites.
Bake cupcakes and decorate them-  Have each of
your friends bring one ingredient for cupcakes
or decorating supplies. My friends and I
recently did this and the pictures of the
cupcakes are probably the best part, but nothing
is better for bonding than cake batter, icing and
sprinkles.

Boba- For those of you who are lost, boba are
tapioca balls that are added to tea drinks. If you
have never had this, it is definitely a must. If
you have had it, find a friend who hasn't
and introduce them. This costs just as
much as a Starbucks drink and is much
more exciting. Sidenote, boba is also
referred to as pearl.

Soccer game - This is the best way to kill
an afternoon, better yet it is also great for
killing stress. My friends and I started
pick up soccer games in the middle of the
college application season and still have
them as often as possible. This is a great
way to get to know your friends and
doesn't require baking for those of us who
are less domestically inclined.
Art shows/Lectures – I may be a bit biased or advantaged with this one,
you should definitely check out the local scene. Colleges can frequently

get pretty high-end guests and usually do not charge for admission.  This
get pretty high-end guests and usually do not charge for admission.  This
is the great way to have an intellectual evening, and after it you can
ponder the lecture over coffee.

Board Game Night - If you want something more engaging than a movie
night or baking, whip out the Monopoly and Life. My personal favorite is
Cranium, a game that tests your wit and artistic ability, but pick the one
you think your friends will like most. Given most people have these
games at home already this is a free event, but don't forget to have
snacks on hand or maybe order a pizza?

Picnics in the park - Have each person bring some kind of food. If you
want an exciting twist make everyone dress up like they were going to a
cocktail party or a masquerade. Adding the costumes makes an ordinary
picnic a little more personal and magical. If costumes aren't your thing
make it a dessert picnic and have everyone just bring desserts. Don't
forget your camera for this one!

Scavenger Hunt -  Break into two groups of people. If you have friends
who can drive,  make sure there is a driver in each group. If not, this can
be done on foot. Each group should make a list of 10 random objects and
the two groups should trade the lists. Which ever team gets the objects
first without having to buy them, wins.

Volunteer - Every community needs something, so figure out what it is
in your community and work with your friends to get it. I started
volunteering with a friend at a local charity almost 2 years ago, we went
once a week for a few hours. It gave us time to talk and give back. Before
we knew it more and more people were going. This can be as simple as
cleaning your local park or walking dogs at the local kennel, but make
sure you call ahead if you are taking a large group.

Start a band - It's a little ambitious, but this is how all good things start.
Find friends who can play instruments and set up in the garage. If they
can't plat real instruments that is okay, remember the Stomp guys got
famous with trashcan lids. Have fun and experiment with different
sounds. Make fun of yourselves a bit, and who knows you may just end
up being The Beatles of the 21st Century.

The most important thing to remember is to just have fun. There is no
point in hanging out with people if you can't make memories. So throw
your wallet to the side and let the good (cheap?) times roll.
