| When Living Life Gets You Down By: Shiva Threatts They come to you from all sides. They are colds, the flu, viruses, and infections. It seems that they are the guaranteed elements that everyone from every walk of life will encounter at some point in their life. Yet, those who have experienced any or all of these illnesses know they can really get you down. Days spent in bed, doctor visits, prescriptions, tea, and the like; sometimes it can make you put your real life on the backburner. So, how does one combat these microscopic villains? It begins with personal hygiene and a few healthy living tips. Writer G.K. Chesterson says: “The trouble with always trying to preserve the health of the body is that it is so difficult to do without destroying the health of the mind.” But the following will show you how simple and painless personal health can be attained. Staying healthy begins with a healthy way of living. Hand washing seems simple enough, but so many forget to do it when it matters the most during the day. Washing your hands after visits to the restroom, coming in contact with other’s hands, and especially after coming in contact with animals prevents the spread of illness and disease. Touching your face, especially around your mouth, or touching others after coming in contact with germs contri- butes to the greatest amount of exposure to illness. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that washing hands “saves lives.” It is not simply an advisement; it’s the best method of preventing illness. Second to making sure to keep hands clean is to boost your immune system by getting healthy amounts of rest and eating the right foods. Sure sweets and greasy fast foods taste the best, but they also do the most damage to your health. Those same greasy and sweet foods slow you down during the day and do nothing to assist young bodies with nutrients for growth and health. Eating a well rounded diet of fruits, vegetables, and meats not only provides you with the energy to stay awake all day (you never needed those Red Bulls!), but it also gives your body enough nutrients to fight of those germs that it comes into contact with on a daily basis. Remaining healthy is not as compli- cated as it may sometimes appear to be in health class. Remembering simple skills throughout the day can make all the difference. Always remember to wash your hands. Soap can prevent a limitless amount of illnesses and serves as your first defense against germs you come in contact with physically during the day. Eating a healthy and well rounded diet also assists your inner defense system. When you fuel your body it will be able to go that much further during the day and stand that much stronger against those illnesses that breach your soapy clean defense. Keeping up with those two skills will make all the difference in not only your long-term health but also your day to day health because no one wants to get another cold! And if at all possible, try and take the stairs over the elevator and walk as often as you possibly can. A little physical exertion goes a long way in physical health. It all begins with the basics. In the words of Virgil: “the greatest wealth is health.” |
