              December's Movies

By: Rebekah Maple

This December’s big screen titles
are sure to entertain many audiences
when it is too cold and dreary to be
outside.  The movies range from the
lighthearted Alvin and the
Chipmunks to a more serious but
fascinating, The Young Victoria.
Each week offers something new to
keep your spirits up during a
wonderful holiday season.

On December 4, you might want to
get the family together to laugh and
relate to the upcoming holiday
comedy Everybody’s Fine.  It puts
expectations into perspective and
shows the importance of family.  When holiday plans change and widower
Frank’s (De Niro) children can’t come home for the holidays, he decides to
embark on an impromptu road trip to surprise them.  What Frank wants is
a picture perfect holiday, but his destination helps him discover that
everyone’s lives are far from perfect.  The films A-list stars include Robert
De Niro, Kate Beckinsale and Drew Barrymore.  This film is sure to have
the family laughing and bonding throughout.  (PG-13)

The December 11 movie, The Lovely Bones, is based on the critically
acclaimed best-selling novel by Alice Sebold.  It’s about Susie Salmon, a 14-
year-old girl who has been murdered, who watches over her family – and
her killer – from heaven.  Because the killer hasn’t been caught, Susie’s
father and sister become suspicious of a neighbor and begin to investigate
him.  They manage to get themselves into dangerous situations but are
willing to take the risk to find justice for Susie.  Oscar® nominee Mark
Wahlberg and Oscar® winners Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon star in
this drama.  If the film is like the book, it will tug at your heartstrings and
keep you enthralled the entire time.  (PG-13)

Taking place in 1837, The Young Victoria shows the turbulent first years
of Queen Victoria's rule, and her enduring romance with Prince Albert.
Although the film portrays historical events, the movie’s relatable plot is
not like a history lesson.  On December 18, you will get the change to
relate to a teenager who doesn’t get along with her mother, has fallen in
love for the first time and is in a job that’s way over her head.  Emily
Blunt and Rupert Friend play Young Victoria and Prince Albert. (PG)

On Christmas Day, if the plot doesn’t get you interested in this film, the
stars will.  Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger, Jude Law and Colin Farrell
dominate the screen in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.  This
fantastical morality tale tells the story of Dr. Parnassus who has been
blessed with the gift of guiding the imaginations of others.  His
'Imaginarium' is a traveling show where members of the audience get an
irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and
gloom.  The film looks like an extremely entertaining tale that surely
doesn’t lack good-looking actors along the way. (PG-13)

For a more carefree movie going experience on Christmas, Alvin and the
Chipmunks: The Squeakquel is a fun one to consider.  Alvin, Simon and
Theodore take a break from their busy musical lives and return to school,
where they look to win a $25,000 prize in a battle of the bands contest in
order to save their school's music program.  But the Chipmunks
unexpectedly meet their match in three singing chipmunks known as The
Chipettes -- Brittany, Eleanor and Jeanette.  The Chipmunk’s humor and
wit are sure to entertain the whole family and give everyone a break from
busy holiday planning.  (PG)

Whether it is date night or family night, theater’s everywhere are sure to
have everyone’s interest in mind.  You’ll definitely want to take time to
see at least some of these interesting works of art, even if you only go to
star gaze. Information obtained from imdb.com
