| Movie Review: Couples Retreat By: Tala Al-Husry Couples Retreat stars Vince Vaughn as Dave, a father of two that takes his wife Ronnie to join his friends at Eden, a beautiful resort for couples. What they don’t realize is that Eden forces its visitors to participate couples skill-building sessions that include swimming in shark-infested waters. The film is its funniest when it is rooted in reality and its only rooted in reality for about ten minutes. Sadly, once the film goes to Eden, the plot falls apart and the gags fail to make the audience laugh. The staff at the Eden resort acted weird. One of them kept rolling his Rs and another ran around in a tiny swimsuit, without eliciting much laughter. I saw Couples Retreat in a packed theater of excited people who seemed determined to like the movie. Even they stopped laughing about twenty minutes into it. The cast, which includes Jason Bateman (Juno, Arrested Development), Kristin Davis (Sex and the City), Malin Akerman (27 Dresses) and Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshal) could have done a much better job with a better script. Vince Vaughn wrote the script with Jon Favreau and Dana Fox, I think Jon and Vince should stick to their day job. The biggest bright spot in this film is the adorable Colin Baiocchi, who plays Dave and Ronnie’s kid, Kevin. He pees inappropriate places while looking cute. His scenes were the funniest in the film. If you’re a hardcore Vince Vaughn fan, go ahead and watch the movie. Otherwise wait till the DVD comes out and just watch The Wedding Crashers again. |
