| Movie Review: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past By: Tala Al-Husry Ghost of Girlfriends Past portrays the journey of Connor Mead (played by Matthew McConaughey) from cute little boy to complete jerk to gentleman. Connor returns to his childhood home for his brother’s wedding, when the ghost of his playboy role model Uncle Wayne (played by Michael Douglass) tells him that three ghosts will visit him through- out the night. The ghosts allow Connor to reexamine his life and change the course of his future. The movie, written by John Lucas and Scott Moore, is based on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. In this case, Connor Mead is a romance Scrooge - he hoards women without committing to any. He neglects Jenny Perotti, played by Jennifer Garner, his childhood crush and love of his life. He even dumps three women at once on a video conference call. His visits to different parts of his past explain how he became the womanizing, callous man we see at the beginning of the movie. Other than Connor Mead, the characters are clichéd and one-dimensional. They range from the bridezilla, the stupid girls that keep falling for Connor and “The One,” Jenny Perotti. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is a romantic comedy and it does well even though the secondary characters are a bit cartoonish. The physical comedy and the one-liners will keep you laughing. Emma Stone plays the ghost of girlfriends past, Allison Vandermeesh, Connor’s “first.” She takes Connor (and the audience) back to the 80’s with her metal mouth giggles and teenybopper style. Stone ensures the audience is laughing at a lot more than Connor Mead’s ill-advised shaggy haircut. Director Mark Waters succeeds in making the family relationships the true heart of the film. Connor’s brother, Paul Mead (Breckin Mayer) brings out the human side of Connor and allows the movie to extend beyond a “boy meets girl” chick flick. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past gives the audience enough humor to stay entertained and enough emotion to leave them touched and satisfied with that happy feeling in their chests. If you’re a Romantic Comedy junkie like me, you’ll definitely love this movie. |
