| Music Review: Demi Lovato By: Lauren Ballard Talk has been surrounding Demi Lovatos' third studio album, "UNBROKEN". I have to say , that after hearing her album over and over again for a full month, I have become a huge fan. I am not the only one. She has hit over 5 million followers on twitter. That is impressive. Not only can she sing, but she is full of soul and power. You can feel it when listening to her album. What is so inspiring about her is her deep and relatable songs. Pretty much it is her life story that is so intriguing. Demi Lovato has been an idol to all young girls with her biggest roles in the Disney's, "Camp Rock" movies. She seemed like the happiest young girl who was living out her dreams. Very few knew of her inner pain and turmoil. Lovato had a major problem with eating disorders and cutting her wrists. This is a problem that is not spoken about much, but does exist. According to the South Carolina Department of Health, in the Unites States, approximately 7 million women suffer from an eating disorder. This is not something new to these young girls. They have experienced it themselves, or have known of someone who suffered from it. For Lovato to have gone through this, it gave her strength to share it with the world. In an interview on 20/20, sometime this year, she made it known to the world, of the disease and sickness she had suffered from. She admitted going to rehab for about 6 months, and truly found peace and solitude in herself. It was the first time she was genuinely happy. According to E! Online, Demi describes this as a “daily struggle”. It is easier now, but it is something she has to deal with every day. “it’s a daily journey and it’ s definitley going to be a struggle that I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life”. Lovato was proud to make this statement and wanted young girls around the world to know that she could relate. She wanted nothing more than for these girls to know that they are not alone, and that they too, can recover and live a happier and healthier life. From this major change, and better outlook on life, "Unbroken" was made. Now this album is no regular album. It is truly the story of a young woman who overcomes darkness, heartbreak, pain, and every other thing in life we all have experienced. Every young girl, at one time or another, has looked pain right in the eye, whether it has been through bullying, depression with family, negative body image, or just pure unhappiness with life. One of her most powerful songs, “Skyscraper” has to be one of the best songs on that album. It is about the confidence you need. We all go through something harsh in life , but it is what we learn and gain out of it that makes us strong. The lyric, “You can take everything I have, you can break everything I am, like I’m made of glass. Like I’m made of paper. Go on and try to tear me down. I will be rising from the ground, like a skyscraper.” Sarah Chaisson Warner |
