Dear Deborah,

My friends and I don't really want to go to our prom. Do you have some
ideas for other cool stuff we can do that night instead?

~ Shannon, 17, Maine

                Hi Shannon!

Prom not your thing?  Not a problem! Here are a few
                ideas….

                (a)    WANT TO STAY AT HOME??  If you choose to stay in
on prom night you could go a few ways. If it’s just a couple of
girlfriends, you might consider doing an all-out girls night/pj party.
Hold nothing back! Get some sappy movies, do your nails, mud masks,
play truth or dare, make smoothies, eat lots of chocolate (ooh..you
could do fondue). Have a pillow fight if you need to get in the mood!!  If
you are looking for something a little more “prom-like”, you could
throw yourself a theme party where guests would come dressed the part
and the food and music would follow (i.e. a decades party, movie theme
party, a Las Vegas night out). If neither of those work….maybe a late
night BBQ and/or karaoke machine is more your style?

(b)   LOOKING TO GET OUT?  If you feel the need to get out of the
house, you could indulge yourself in the ultimate prom experience by
renting a limo and having a night out on the town with your friends.
Think dinner/movies/theatre/bowling/concert topped off with a late
night visit to your favorite all night diner or pizza place. Similarly
(though pricier) you could rent out a boat or a party-bus (if they have in
your area) for an ultimate party on wheels.

(c)    WANT TO MAKE A DAY OUT OF IT?  Moving away from the party
idea, you could sign yourself and a few close friends up for a spa day or
head out to an amusement park.

(d)   GOT A BIT MORE MONEY TO SPEND?  If you really want a non-
prom, but still amazing memory, you could rent a cabin and go camping
for the weekend, head out to the beach and have a bonfire (not all
beaches allow this so check into it first!), get a hotel room or stay at a
local bed and breakfast or cute inn and enjoy the pool and room service.

Hope that helps!! Whatever you do decide HAVE FUN!!  That’s the whole
idea of prom anyway!
