by: Mai Eldib

Barnard College is located in Morningside Heights in Manhattan, New York
City. Barnard is one of the most preeminent Women’s Colleges and Liberal
Arts Colleges in the country. In addition, it is also an affiliate to a major Ivy
League research university – Columbia University. Barnard College currently
enrolls around 2400 women from 48 states and 38 countries across the
world. Founded in 1889, Barnard College is one of the members of the Seven
Sister Colleges. Barnard affords her students the ability to participate in an
array of student organizations and clubs which is also increased with her
partnership with Columbia University.
Being a Liberal Arts college,
Barnard provides her students
with a choice in 50 different
majors that range from
humanities, natural sciences to
interdisciplinary studies. If this
isn’t enough, there are double or
joint degree programs with
Columbia Universities various
graduate schools.  And if you are
feeling adventurous, Barnard
offers her students the ability to
travel to every corner of the
world from Cameroon to
Australia for a chance to Study
Abroad.

Incoming First-Years need not to feel confused; the Campus had a home-like
feel with all the first year’s living in the same housing complex. Famously
known as the QUAD, it is composed of 4 buildings that connect and provide a
home away from home. And even during the blistering cold days of New
York, Barnard maintains an underground tunnel throughout the whole of her
campus. In addition, incoming first years are provided with a meal plan that
can be used across both campuses – Columbia University and at Barnard
College.

First Years also have the opportunity to partake in a diverse variety of
organizations on Campus. From the Newspapers: Barnard Bulletin and
Columbia Spectator, every imaginable cultural club, theatre groups,
government organizations to activist groups and charitable organizations
choices are vast. And if is a sport and exercise you want. Barnard has two
kinds of teams – intramural sports and the ability to be part of NCAA Division
I teams. With its partnership with Columbia, Barnard gives her students the
ability to compete in sports such as: tennis, soccer, lacrosse, crew, basketball
and more.  And don’t ever worry about getting lazy, Barnard is unique
because it is one of the schools that requires her students to complete two
semesters in physical education.
With all these options at your finger tips, it’s
good to think about affordability and what
are ways to subsidize my education. The
Barnard academic tuition is listed as
$33,078, with an additional $11,392 for
books, meal plans, and housing. It’s an
expensive endeavor. but have no fear,
Barnard offer 55% of her students financial
aid. More information is available on
financial aid on the Barnard website.
