| Featured College: Georgia State University Written by: Shiva Threatts Georgia State University (GSU) lies in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Their current student population is over 28, 000 and they have students representing more than 145 different countries. The school which was founded in 1913 has dedicated itself to teaching, research, and service. Georgia State is also the second largest school in the state in a city that has over twenty different colleges and universities. Yet, for all its statistical accolades, GSU offers nothing but the best for its students in degree programs and a state of the art library. Georgia State University has attained its SACS accreditation all the way until 2018. They offer fifty-two different degree programs and an astounding 250 fields of study located in six different colleges. To top things off, in a declining economy GSU provides $7 million daily to the Georgia state economy. With such a strong economical influence it should come as no surprise that GSU has an unbelievable $459.5 million revenue which enables them to provide students with lower tuition rates and a library with at least 4.97 million book holdings. Students like Charles Udoji praise GSU for its diverse student population, and the many events that the housing department hosts for on campus students such as: casino and movie nights, segway tours of downtown Atlanta and the schools close proximity to many Atlanta businesses. Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta it is true that GSU is in close proximity to some of the hottest spots in the city. Home to one of the largest financial districts, downtown Atlanta contains many structures predating the 1900s and the most active businesses in the Metropolitan Atlanta area. If you don't have transportation to see many of the great sights such as Five Points, there is the Marta transit system that transports students and state residents throughout the city for pennies to the dollar. Overall, GSU is the total package for prospective college students. Even recent graduates have nothing but praise for the institution. Esosa Oriakhi (C ’08) remarks that she “loved the location, campus diversity, state of the art computer labs and a supportive system of professors.” More than half of the faculty is tenured or on the track to tenure and for sports buffs GSU is home to 16 NCAA division 1 athletic teams. With tuition as low as $9,712 for non-residents and $2,428 for Georgia residents, GSU is a major discount on a superior education in troubled economic times.
