| January's Athena of the Month: Gabrielle Margiotta by Sarah Cushing |
| Gabrielle Margiotta is a very driven young woman. A high school senior from New York, Gabrielle is not only thinking about college but is also planning for graduate school and is fine tuning her ideas about how she will use her education to teach children and teens about food and nutrition. Gabrielle took time out of her busy schedule to talk with AMG about her passion for science, her future goals and what she does in her spare time. Q: So Gabrielle, since you are a high school senior you must be thinking about what you are going to do once you graduate. A: Yes, I am—I want to go to college and major in food and nutrition and then become a dietician. I am deciding between two colleges right now. Q: Congratulations on your acceptances to college! The study of food and nutrition has a lot to do with science. Is science your favorite subject in school? |

| A: Well, my favorite class is a food and nutrition elective I am taking. But, I do like biology a lot—I am taking Advanced Placement biology right now. Q: What is it about food and nutrition that interests you so much? A: I think it is so interesting because it is such a big part of life. Food affects every aspect of your life—especially children’s lives because they are growing. |
Q: Is working with children an interest of yours? A: Yes! There are a lot of options when you become a dietician, but ultimately I would like to work with children and teenagers and help them with their dietary needs. Q: Wow! That’s a great goal—it sounds like you have a really good idea of what you would like to do in your career. A: Yes, I do. But, becoming a dietician is a lot more rigorous than it sounds. You have to graduate college and then go on to get your Master’s degree. After that you have to take national exam to become a registered dietician. Q: What about goals you have outside of your future career? A: I do want to travel. I want to go to Spain. I have taken four years of Spanish in school, and knowing the language makes me want to be able to use it. Q: Are you involved in any activities in or outside of school? A: I play the clarinet and have been doing that since the fifth grade. I play field hockey in the fall and am also in the downhill ski club. Outside of school I am a horseback rider. I have been doing that since I was five and even used to compete throughout the summer. Q: Oh cool! What do you enjoy about horseback riding? A: I love being around horses—they are definitely my favorite animal. Riding is so enjoyable; relaxing but good exercise at the same time. Q: What do like to do in your free time—when you have a day off? A: I don’t have much downtime, but when I do I like to read. I like historical fiction and contemporary fiction, too. I also like to watch T.V. with my parents and spend time with them and go shopping with my Mom and friends. Q: Here’s a fun question Gabrielle: What makes you unique or stand apart from others? A: I would say that I am very caring and trustworthy. My friends know I will always be there for them. Q: Great! Thanks for speaking with us Gabrielle! A: Thanks for having me! |
