Athena of the Month - Jaclyn
By: Caitlin Emmons

At only thirteen, this month's Athena is an active girl scout, loves to sing
and dance, and can already play three instruments. Meet Jaclyn, a rockin'
chick from Pennsylvania who is out to change the world!

It has been almost seven years since Jaclyn became a girl scout. Since then
she has raised money for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals, rung bells for the Salvation Army, worked at the food bank and
sent money to aid those affected by Hurricane Katrina. But what Jaclyn
loves most about this organization is the friends it has brought her. " I like
to just be the goof-ball I really am.  I can act like whatever around my
friends and my friends act the same way," Jaclyn said.

Jaclyn's favorite girl scout experience, other than eating those delicious
cookies, was attending a 60s themed camp that was put on by her scout
leader. This camp gave her the chance to pretend she was someone else but
she got to act it out surrounded by  her closest friends. This love of
pretending is how she got into acting.

If Jaclyn could be in any play she would be in "Wicked." Luckily for Jaclyn,
her school choir is doing their own rendition of the award-winning musical.
For the show, Jaclyn will be singing the song "For Good." What she loves
most about acting is that for a little while you can become someone else. " I
like that you can transform yourself into that character and be someone
else for once in your life!" Jaclyn said.

One of the biggest influences in Jaclyn's life has been her love of music, and
who can blame her the girl can sing, play the drums, serenade on the piano,
and rock it on the guitar! When Jaclyn is bored she goes to her room and
sings along to the songs on the radio. Sometimes Jaclyn even writes her
own songs, then she sings them and strums along with her guitar, a
superstar in the making. Jaclyn would love to be able to play with her
favorite band, Flyleaf, an alternative metal group. Jaclyn's favorite colors
represent her dedication to music and the rocking way of life. "Black and
Red, they represent my will to "Rock n' Roll.'"

But what makes Jaclyn something really special? Unlike most thirteen year
olds Jaclyn believes in changing the world. If she could change just two
things she would like to eradicate sexism and child abuse, it's not hard to
see why this girl is really an Athena. Jaclyn is an inspiration to those around
her. Her creative energy, her love of life, and her desire for equality make
her the perfect April Athena.

Thanks Jaclyn for giving us the chance to meet a hardworking, dedicated,
and motivated young lady!
